Candle Burning Tips

bullet When a candle burns, the flame consumes the wax and produces water vapor and carbon dioxide. These are the same products that we produce when we exhale.

bullet Containers can become very hot!  Be sure to place on a heat-resistant surface and use care when moving a recently lit candle.

bullet Keep the wick trimmed to approximately 1/4 inch, and do not let the hot wick come in contact with glass surfaces.

bullet Never leave a burning candle unattended.  Keep out of reach of children.  Keep away from flammable materials.

bullet Reports have been made suggesting that lead dissipating into the air as a candle burns may be responsible for various illnesses. There is no lead in candle wax. Any lead in a candle would be found in its wick. It is possible for cheap or imported candles to contain lead wicks but the production of lead wicks in the U.S. has been banned. Since the metal core of a wick is important in creating a hotter and better burn, many wicks do contain either zinc or tin, both of which have been found to be safe and non-toxic.

bullet Quality candles will not smoke if they are burned properly. Smoking occurs when the flame has been disturbed or if its wick is too long, allowing the flame to produce an overabundance of carbon.

bullet It is important to trim the wick to  1/4 inch each time before burning. If the wick gets long during the burn, extinguish the flame, trim the wick, and relight the candle. This will help keep your container, as well as your walls and ceilings, free from carbon buildup.

bullet Be wary of candle companies that claim their candles are double or triple scented. This is primarily a sell tactic. Because of the composition of fragrances, there is a point at which too much fragrance will cause the candle to burn poorly or even flare up. Also, rather than mixing well with the wax, too much fragrance can leak through the wax, making the candle look unattractive.

bullet Inexpensive or imported candles may look pretty but be of very poor quality. If the candle is very light in weight, it may be made from whipped wax and have very little burning longevity. Very often, only the top of the candle is scented, leaving the rest to have either no fragrance or even a kerosene-like fragrance. There is also a greater chance of these candles containing lead wicks.
